BONABOTO Donates Medical Items to Bolga Hospital
The United Kingdom branch of BONABOTO has donated medical items valued at about 1,000 pounds to the Bolgatanga Hospital. The items included blood pressure machines, blood glucometres, refills etc.
Mrs Helen Adonkolgo, Organizing Secretary of BONABOTO (UK), presented the items to Mr Mark Woyongo, the Upper East Regional Minister, who in turn presented them to the Regional Directorate of the hospital. Mrs. Adonkolgo pointed out that every year the association, through its fund raising programmes in the UK, have been contributing to the socio-economic development of the region. She said apart from the medical items, the branch had also donated 250 computers and 300 laptops to senior high schools and some health institutions in the region.
Mr Woyongo commended BONABOTO for their support and said currently the doctor patient ratio in the region is 1:38,000, which, he noted, was not the best. “The medical outreach programme of BONABOTO is helping a lot of patients who would have had to travel to Kumasi and Accra to access health care”, he said. The Regional Minister added that it was based on this that the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and the district assemblies were contributing 3,800 Ghana cedis to support the medical outreach programme this year.
“The RCC has also tasked all the district assemblies in the region to sponsor five students to pursue medicine in the universities of which they are complying. We hope this will help address the acute shortage of doctors in the region in the near future,” the Regional Minister said. He further entreated other organizations to emulate the examples of BONABOTO by contributing to help the region as one of the deprived regions in the country.
Dr Peter Baffoe, Medical Director of the hospital, said the items would help in administering healthcare to the people and that his directorate had been enjoying the fruitful partnership with BONABOTO over the years.
