The
Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Talensi, Mr. John Tia
has urged the Upper East Regional Minister to immediately inaugurate the
five-member committee set up by his predecessor to look into the recent
disturbances in the Tongo-Beo area.
He said an early investigation and resolution of the matter was crucial
because any delay might aggravate the security situation in the town.
A statement signed by Mr. Tia after a trip to the area following the clashes
also appealed to the government, the diplomatic community, NGOs and other
well-meaning Ghanaians to go to the aid of the people.
It said more that 100 people had been displaced, with their houses, personal
effects and food-stuffs burnt, while the security officers in the area
were also facing logistic problems.
The statement said the MP interacted with the Tongo-rana, Kwadan Tii (the
Overlord of the Talensis), the chief and people of Tongo-Beo, the Talensi
Rock Union, officials of the Talensi/Nabdam District Assembly and the
Bolgatanga Divisional Police Command. It said the MP urged all parties
in the disturbances to exercise restraint and allow the committee, when
inaugurated, to carry out its mandate to find a lasting solution to the
problem.
Fighting broke out among some sections of Tongo-Beo on January 23, 3005
resulting in the burning down of some property and personal effects. Two
people sustained various degrees of injuries, while several others were
displaced.
